Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup will feature at least one model with LCD display. As opposed to rumors starting all three iPhones launching this year will adopt OLED panels, Apple sees LCD models as the major driver for sales volume.
Apple is rumored to be working on two models with OLED panels made by Samsung and just one model with LCD panels similar to ones found on iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. But the LCD version will cost less than OLED models and is expected to deliver better sales, suggests a new report from The Wall Street Journal citing people involved in Apple’s supply chain.
This new report aligns with previous statements citing former KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo believes Apple will introduce three iPhone models this year with design and features similar to iPhone X. One of the models will be successor to last year’s iPhone X while another model is said to be a large-screen variant of iPhone X, likely to be called iPhone X Plus.

There will be another model with 6.1-inch LCD display, which Kuo believes might start for as low as $599. This price will be $100 discount over the starting price of iPhone 8. The iPhone X debuted last year starts at $999, which analysts believe is restricting potential buyers from upgrading to new model.

Apple is refraining from adopting OLED displays for all of its model due to huge premium commanded by OLED panels and lack of a viable alternative to Samsung. LG was believed to join Samsung as second supplier this year but reports suggest its panels do not match Samsung in terms of quality. Apple is expected to record quarter results for the second quarter of 2018 as well.
